While you won't want to read an entire book, these might be worth skimming for ideas/specifics.

Periodicals:

We have a year's worth of back issues for several politically-oriented periodicals.  If you don't have a password bookmark, look in the Library Forum in First Class.  (In the US student forum)

USEFUL DATABASES:

From home you'll need the passwords. 

Opposing Viewpoints:  Contains popular and academic articles on current controversial issues.  (e.g. there are SEVERAL on torture/Abu Ghraib, etc)

 

CQ Researcher:  From the Congressional Quarterly.  Click on the "CQ RESEARCHER ONLINE"  link.  Reports on all aspects of issues related to US policy and government, including a pro/con section.

 

Historical Newspapers:  Pre-selected articles from the NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times and ChicagoTribune.

Choose "TIMELINE" search, then click on the far left, "The TURN."  From here, you can choose several topics: Disputed election, Terrorist Attacks, War in Afghanistan, War in Iraq. (to 2002)

 

National Newspapers:  Current.  Searches the Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, NY Times, LA Times, WSJ and Washington Post.
